Mobility Issues

 Mobility Issues

When we moved from Ohio to New York we knew there would be adjustments. We addressed one of them, sort of, before leaving Ohio. We moved from a house into a much smaller condo. The downsizing experience helped when it came time to move from the three-bedroom condo to our L-studio (overlooking the Hudson River with a view of the GWB).

The biggest adjustment was giving up our cars. At least, that's what we expected. But to be honest I hardly miss the 2014 Kia Soul at all.

In Ohio a car was necessary because of how our lives were spread out over such a large territory. My work was about 15 miles to the west; my mom was about 50 miles to the east. Restaurants and shopping were sprinkled around. Public transit in town was available, but inconvenient. Basically, a car was necessary.

But here, most of the things I need are within walking distance. And for those that aren't, a bus is rarely more than 15 minutes away. Yes, it is far more cumbersome to have to carry groceries or other purchases rather than simply unload from the garage into the kitchen. But that inconvenience is offset by not having to pay for gas, insurance, maintenance, and parking.

We're still getting our city legs and learning the ins and outs of public transportation. There have been a few times when the bus or train would have gotten us to our destination but an Uber was quicker with less anxiety due to navigating. We've only lived here less than seven months. We'll get the kinks ironed out.
